Tall Storeys SIX FEET WIDE £550,000 A house in west London has gone on sale for more than half a million pounds, despite being only 1.8m (6ft) wide. In estate agent speak, the house for sale in Goldhawk Road, Shepherd's Bush, is "historic and enchanting" and "internationally recognised for its unique character". But to most £549,950 is a lot to pay for a property which is no wider than a disabled toilet cubicle, however enchanted they may be by its idiosyncrasies. The five-floor property is being sold by estate agents Faron Sutaria, who with clever photography have managed to suggest that anyone swinging their cat in the living room would not give their pet a nasty bang on the head. But there is no disguising that the bedroom is so thin you can only climb into the built-in bed from one end.Despite its width, however, the little house packs a lot in. It boasts two reception rooms, a dining room, an extremely narrow kitchen in the basement, a bathroom, shower room, two bedrooms and a study. Sceptics can visit the house tomorrow or Sunday as part of the estate agent's open house weekend. The price reflects the property's novelty value, according to Simon Beatson, of agents Faron Sutaria. "It's unique," he said. "For pounds per square foot it's actually incredibly good value." He is confident of reaching a good price as a shortage of stock across London and low interest rates continue to drive prices up.

One bedroom flat, Roland Gardens, London SW7, £406,000
Sold through Faron Sutaria 020 7590 0300
London’s South Kensington is famed for its Gallic charms, with streets packed with boulangeries and patisseries, so it is unsurprising that this period conversion with three sets of ‘French’ doors was in demand when it came to the market in August.
On the first floor of an oh-so-chic 19th Century building, not only did it have all the usual desirables – tall ceilings, a private balcony, and a share in the freehold – but, for those burdened with heavy shopping, there was the added delight of a lift.
It didn’t take long for prospective buyers to register its attractions and, within weeks, three competing bidders drove the asking price up from £400,000 to £406,000.

Victorian value: Wendell Road, Shepherd's Bush, London, W12 Price: £750,000 Agent: Faron Sutaria, Tel: 020 8994 4111 They say: A beautifully presented and well preserved four-bedroom home with through reception, kitchen/diner, two bathrooms, one en suite as well as a garden and large roof terrace. We say: The owners have done their best to maximise the space but it means there's no room for you to add value - you're going with the market on this one, although this is not a bad price for a house of this size in this location. And it's always far better to be living in that the enormous roof extension that looking at it from the house across the road.

Streets of Learning School may be out for summer, but it’s not off the agenda. The battle for the best free school places is hotting up, and could offer homeowners who live near a good state school the chance to cash in on the credit crunch. Mark Kraven, lettings manager of the Notting Hill branch of Faron Sutaria, now receives twice as many inquiries for homes near the heavily oversubscribed Fox primary school as he did a year ago. Competition is so intense, parents are making huge sacrifices to get a home on the right street. “We had one family of two adults and two kids who lived in a one-bed for six months,” Kraven says. “The parents slept on a sofa bed in the living room while the kids slept in bunk beds.”

Photoshopping may help celebrities to lose some pounds in cover shoots, but one well-known West London house has not been subjected to such treatment. It is only 6ft wide, being tall and extremely slender, just like the models who used to call there when Juergen Teller, the edgy fashion photographer, was a resident in the 1990s. The last time the two-bedroom house in Goldhawk Road, Shepherds Bush, changed hands in 2006 for £488,500, its dimensions won it headlines throughout the world. As the owner is, er, upsizing, it is once more on the market for £595,000 through Faron Sutaria (020 8740 7766). The scruffy but hip neighbourhood has changed a little since. The Westfield shopping mall, ten minutes away on foot, arrived last year. Previously there was a massage parlour next door; in an upwardly mobile development, the premises are now a chapel.

It may be generosity, but with base rates at 0.5 per cent, many parents view helping their offspring as a shrewd investment. Simon Corringham of Faron Sutaria says that, if current rate cuts continue, the market will be overrun with cash buyers who no longer trust banks to safeguard their cash: "They're fed up with their money earning paltry interest in the face of inflation at three-something per cent and feel their money would be better spent on a buy-to-let investment or a home for their children. There's a trend for parents buying a flat with several bedrooms, allocating one to their son or daughter and renting the rest to their child's friends."

TOP OF THE DROPS: Down 42% to £1.75m The price of this eight-bedroom Victorian terrace in Fulham, southwest London, has been reduced by a staggering £1.25m. The 4,600 sq ft property, which has a high-ceilinged double living room, two further receptions, six bathrooms and a kitchen with an Aga and french doors leading to a small, secluded garden, came onto the market in June 2008 for £3m; the price was cut to £2.4m in October and £1.75m last month. “Last year, we sold three houses on the same street, one of which went for £1.7m, and was half the size,” says Simon Corringham, director of the Fulham office of the selling agent, Faron Sutaria. He has noticed a shift in buyers from City workers to European businessmen and those with euro savings: “At this price, it is an amazing opportunity.”

Simon Corringham, director of Faron Sutaria, which has branches in west and central London, has been targeting the euro-rich Germans and Italians in Fulham. “Four-bedroom houses go for between £850,000 and £1.2m in SW6,” he says. “We introduce French families to each other.” Five-bedroom houses on Hazlebury Road, near L’Ecole des Petits, are popular: “The nanny can walk the children down the road.” Corringham’s other clients have included German rock singers, and Italians after pieds-à-terre. “They can’t stand hotels, and are looking for comfy, spacious flats near the Tube,” he says. “We’ve had cash buyers spending about £500,000 in the area.”
